Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary-Overview
Shahid Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary is the new name of the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary. It is located in the Unnao district on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway in Uttara Pradesh, India. It consists of a marsh swallow lake around 2.25 square km area. This sanctuary keeps around 250 species of migratory as well as domestic birds. The migratory birds like Sarus Crane, King Crow, and Indian Roller, are mostly from CIS (or formerly USSR) countries. The flying creatures relocate crosswise over the Himalayas from Tibet, China, Europe, and Siberia during winters. A portion of these winged creatures flies more than 5000 km or more 8500 meters high to reach here.
In addition to birds, the sanctuary also houses a deer park, watchtowers, and boats. Besides above, the sanctuary abode for reptiles also.
There are a diverse range of birds and lush green pastures that add to the natural beauty of the sanctuary. As a result, its manicured lawns arrange the enjoyable venue for day gathering and picnic location. It will keep you entertained throughout the day with its numerous exhibits. A sanctuary is an ideal place for wildlife tourism as well as photography lovers.
Tourist activities-Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary
Bird Watching-There are two walking tracks around the bird sanctuary. These tracks take you through the entire sanctuary within forest covers and lush greenery. It also lets you have a closer look at the birds and encounter them in a more natural setting. This walking trek would be a great opportunity for getting inner wildlife photography.
Bird Interpretation Centre-There is a Bird Interpretation Centre is within the sanctuary. It provides the information, trivia and behavioral aspects of various species and breeds of aviary creatures. The center also shows short films and documentaries related to wildlife to visitors to educate them about wildlife.
Deer Park-The Sanctuary has a deer park on the premises. It has different breeds of Deer present like the spotted deer and the barking deer with the barking deer being the most famous breed in the park.
Reptile Enclosure – The sanctuary also hosts a section dedicated to reptiles like Cobra, Vipers, Water Snakes and Rattlesnakes among a few others.
Playground-The bird sanctuary also has a playground for kids. This playground has several slides, swings, and rides for the kids to enjoy and is a hit among the children.
Best Season to visit
The best time to visit the sanctuary is from the month of October to March. During these months a huge populous of several species of birds who migrate from colder regions countries and settle at this bird sanctuary.
How to reach-Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary
Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, District-Unnao, is located on Lucknow- Kanpur Road Highway. There is a direct connection between Unnao and Lucknow-Kanpur by Rail and Road.
By Road:- Direct buses come to Unnao from major cities of state Uttara Pradesh and a neighbouring state.
By Rail:-There so many direct trains from Lucknow and from Kanpur to Unnao. Besides these, there are so many trains from other major cities run via Lucknow or Kanpur to Unnao. A number of trains run to Lucknow and Kanpur from the major cities of India.
By Air:- Nearest airport is Lucknow and Kanpur airport.
Where to Stay?
The distance from Lucknow to Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is 44 km by road. Similarly, the distance from Kanpur to Nawabganj is 47 km. So, staying at Lucknow or Kanpur will be more convenient. There are a lot of hotels for all classes are available in both these cities.
