Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park is the new name of the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Keoladeo National Park is at Bharatpur in the eastern Rajasthan.  Earlier it was a royal hunting reserve and was a game reserve for Maharajas and the British. This area was designated as a bird sanctuary on 13 March 1976.  But in 1982, It was declared a national park and then later UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site in 1985 under the category of “Habitat of rare and endangered species”.

It is one of the most fascinating bird sanctuaries in the world. The sanctuary is spread over approx. 29-kilometer region. It is a man-made and man-managed marshland and one of the Bird sanctuary of India. The one-third region of the sanctuary’s habitats is marshland.  As a result, It hosts a number of migratory birds throughout the winter season. 

Apart from this, the sanctuary is famous for the nesting of resident birds also. That is to say, Bharatpur Bird sanctuary is a bird’s paradise of India. 

Flora and Fauna- Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

The location of the park is in Gangetic plain. This haven falls in the semi-arid zone. As a result, the principal forest types are tropical dry deciduous forest blended with dry grassland. So, medium-sized trees and shrubs cover much of the area of the park. 

​There is a changing nature of habitations of the sanctuary. Having trees, hills, fences, and natural water with underwater and above water rising plants inside the sanctuary. The highlands have fields of long types of grass together with dispersed trees and bushes in uneven thickness. The trees of Kadam, Jamun, and Babul dominates the park with a small amount of Kandi and Ber. 

The water vegetation is rich and provides a valuable food source for waterfowls. Because of the marshland of the park, it is a wintering area for massive flocks of migratory waterfowl. Besides birds, there are so many other animals like Nilgai, Cheetal deer, etc that also reside in the park.

This park is the winter abode for migratory birds and a natural habitat for large numbers of resident nesting birds.

 It is also the only regular wintering area in India for the critically endangered Siberian crane.  Apart from this, other migratory birds – Ducks, Geese Waders, Flycatchers, Darter, Spoonbills, are regular visitors of winter months. It is a supreme breeding site for Pelican, Herons, Storks, and Cormorants. 

Besides these, the resident birds are Sarus crane, Eagles, Bulbul, Bee-eaters, Raptors, etc.   Above all make this park a Bird’s paradise of India.

As the various birds come from as far away as EurasiaSiberia, Central Asia and spend their winter in Bharatpur. That is to say, it is a bird’s paradise in India.

 So, the park is one of the best Bird watching sites in Asia. As a result, more than 100,000 visitors come to the park every year in which 45000 are foreign tourists. The visitors are from very serious birdwatchers to school children. The havens open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year. 

This park offers the bird safari which tourists can cover on either foot or cycle or rickshaws. The park management has trained the rickshaw pullers in bird watching and they make for fully knowledgeable guides.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is open throughout the year. But the best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to March. From November to February, numerous migratory birds come here. So, travel to this time will be most enjoyable.

The winter season of Bharatpur from November to February.  So, during winter travel tourists should carry heavy woolens cloths. The summer season of Bharatpur from March to June. So, In summer tourists will feel comfortable in light cotton cloth. The rainfall occurs mainly from July to September. During the rainy season, there is an increase in humidity in the atmosphere. 

How to reach-Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

There is a direct connection from Bharatpur to major cities of India via rail and road. The nearest airport is Agra (56 km away from Bharatpur).

By Rail: There are direct trains from Bharatpur railway station to major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, etc.

By Road: There is a direct connection via the road between Bharatpur to major cities of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. From any city of Rajasthan to Bharatpur, there is a very good Rajasthan State Roadways Bus Service

Where to stay? Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Bharatpur Forest Lodge is located inside the sanctuary. The accommodation inside the Keoladeo National Park is available in the property of the government Bharatpur Ashoka Forest Lodge.

Another one is the lesser expensive Shanti Kutir.  ITDC maintains and runs both of these lodges. The Forest Lodge is a picturesque hotel in the vicinity of the natural treasure trove of the park. It is having a private balcony with the view of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
